Writers, artists and journalists recently met at the Libyan Jihad centre in Tripoli to mark the start of celebrations of Tripoli as a capital of Islamic culture. It was sponsored by the general people's committee for culture and information. Prominent Libyan writer, and historian Dr. Khalifa Tellisi kicked off the program by delivering a cultural lecture entitled " Tripoli and its role in promoting the Islamic presence in the Mediterranean sea ".

Dr. Tellisi reviewed several books that he had written on Libyan history, among them (story of a city) that delved in detail with the historic stages that the city of Tripoli has gone through.

He pointed out that due to the strategic location of Tripoli , as the gate of Africa and at the heart of the Mediterranean ; it had a definitive and unique role through the different Islamic eras as a stronghold and base for Islamic conquests and in defending the Islamic Arab identity and civilization.

He said that ever since the Islamic conquest of Libya , Arabs have recognized the strategic importance of Tripoli for the Mediterranean and for Africa; therefore, they used it as a fortress to defend the Islamic existence in the Mediterranean .

He indicated that invasion made by foreigners of the city of Tripoli proved the extent of its vitality in the planning of these the conquerors that always tried to use it as advance and control center in the Mediterranean basin.

Part of the celebrations marking Tripoli as the capital of Islamic culture for 2007, included a book exhibition was held on the German boat "logos 2" at the port of Tripoli .

On this occasion, the secretary for the people's committee for culture and information of the municipality of Tripoli , Dr. Salem Abdelhamid Sultan emphasized his department's readiness to achieve Libya 's goals of acquiring more knowledge. According to the program, knowledge is a natural right for each person and that ignorance will end when everything is presented in its true color.
