08.01.2007 Under the auspices of GPC for Culture and Information and a midst huge gathering of writers, artists and journalists, the functions of the Tripoli Festivity, capital of Islamic Culture for 2007, have commenced this evening at the Libyan Jihad Center for Historical Studies in Tripoli with a cultural lecture presented by the prominent writer, and Libyan Historian Dr, Khalifa al-Tellissi, under the title : ( Tripoli and its Role in Promoting the Islamic Presence in the Mediterranean Sea) . The lecturer started by addressing greetings to the Leader of the Revolution for his constant support for creative works and his auspices of this comprehensive cultural manifestation. Dr. Tellissi reviewed several books that he had written on Libyan history, among them (Story of a City) which dealt, in details with the historic stages that the city of Tripoli had gone through. The lecturer pointed out that due to the strategic location of Tripoli as the Gate for Africa and at the heart of the Mediterranean defined its unique role through the different Islamic Eras as a stronghold and base for Islamic conquests and in defending the Islamic Arab identity and civilization. He added that the Arabs have known since the Islamic conquest of Libya, the strategic importance of Tripoli on the Mediterranean and in Africa, therefore, they used it as a fortress to defend the Islamic existence in the Mediterranean, indicating that the foreign invasion of the city of Tripoli proved its importance to the other side that tried to use it as an essential location to control the Mediterranean Basin.
