Wednesday, August 15, 2007
Parallel to refurbishing the Tobruk II and Derna Power Plants, the boiler plants 3 + 4 in Benghazi were also refurbished. With the completion of installation and commissioning services at the end of August 2007, Libya had two other blocks available now, each with 35 MWel.
In June 2005, Global Electricity Services Company (GESCO) awarded
ThyssenKrupp Xervon Energy an additional contract in Libya--refurbishment of the boilers 3 + 4 in Benghazi. The boiler plants, installed in 1973, are designed for a steam output of 160 m. tons/hr with a pressure of 98 bar and a makeup steam temperature of 545 °C, each.
The contract includes converting the firing system from heavy oil to natural gas / light oil, in addition to refurbishing pressure parts of the boilers, the air/flue gas ducts, the valves, pumps and blowers.
The firing system was completely switched over, starting with the gas throttling station and the gas and oil supply lines including burner valves and accessories through to the combined oil/gas burners. The plants were also optimised with the replacement of the rotary air heaters with compact internal economizers.
Since the contract was awarded in January 2006, component deliveries, installation works and pressure tests have been successfully completed. The commissioning phase is almost complete as well so that the plants will be handed over on time at the end of August 2007.
